Working out with a personal trainer used to be a luxury for a select few. These days, it can be affordable for just about every one.

There are many reasons to work out with a personal trainer. First of all, your workouts will be fully planned and time-efficient. In addition, assuming you have chosen your trainer carefully, you can be assured of a safe, effective program that’s tailored to your individual needs. You can also count on your trainer to provide motivation.

The right personal trainer should meet these five criteria:

1. Cost. Trainers charge a wide range of fees for their services--between $20 and $100 an hour. Make sure your trainer’s services are in line with your budget.

2. Availability. Check that the trainer is available on the days and times that are most convenient for you. This is critical to the success of your program--do not change your schedule to accommodate your trainer.

3. Comfort. It’s absolutely essential that you and your trainer have compatible personalities and that you are completely at ease with his or her gender, coaching style, habits, and behaviors. It's a good idea not to commit to multiple sessions when you first begin so that you are sure that this trainer is for you.

4. Knowledge and Experience. Your trainer should be knowledgeable about exercise, physiology, safety, equipment, and nutrition. I recommend that he or she be certified by either ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) or ACE (American Council on Exercise), and hold a current certification in CPR.

5. Motivation. Your trainer needs to inspire you. This is absolutely critical. If he or she does not motivate you to achieve your goals, you are wasting time and money.

Remember that your trainer works for you, so interview several candidates before you make your final selection.
