Bob's Believe It or Not?
Can you believe that fruit juice can have even more calories than soda? It may be a good source of vitamins and phytochemicals, but to keep the calories down, replace half a cup with sparkling water. Better yet, eat fruit, which has the fiber juice doesn’t.

One of the first things I ever heard about Oprah Winfrey was that she had lost 67 pounds using a liquid diet fasting-and-supplement system. At the time I was in charge of a health and fitness program at a South Florida hospital and we were inundated by calls from people who wanted to duplicate her success. I didn’t have a good feeling about it. I didn’t think she’d be able to keep the weight off once she stopped the liquid diet and began eating real food again. And, famously, that’s what happened. She gained back the weight, and then some. Ironically, I thought, “I’d like to meet her. I could really help her.”

Fast-forward four years. As fitness director of a spa in Telluride, Colorado, I was poised to finally meet Oprah. She had come to the spa for help losing the weight she had regained, and I had been asked to work with her. My idle claim that I could help her win her weight-loss battle was now going to be put to the test!

Oprah and I hit if off right away, although during our first meeting she wouldn’t look me in the eye. Despite her fame and accomplishments, Oprah felt ashamed of her weight. Little did she know that, far from thinking of her as a failure, I respected her, just as I respect everyone who takes on the monumental challenge of permanent weight loss. And I also suspected that she had more strength and stamina than she even knew.

Every day for three weeks, we hiked, lifted weights and did some cardiovascular exercise in the gym. Oprah has said that it was during this time that she learned why it had been so easy for her to regain the weight after fasting. In fact, she realized she had been doomed to put the pounds back on as soon as she started eating again. It was because, as I explained, she wasn’t exercising much and, therefore, her metabolism was very low. I also told Oprah that she really could lose weight and keep it off—if she did it right. That gave her the confidence to let me show her how to live in an entirely new way. At the end of the three weeks, she’d lost 12 pounds and we had the basis of a great working relationship, not to mention a wonderful friendship.

Ten years later, Oprah has had great success at making important life changes and keeping her weight at a healthy level. She has hiked the Grand Canyon. She has run a marathon. Her physical accomplishments are many. But these great feats aside, what I think has contributed most to her well being is her day-to-day commitment to staying healthy. She exercises daily and makes a point of eating a nutritious diet based on moderate-sized portions. Like everyone else, she may slip up once in a while, but she doesn’t let it get her down. She gets back on track and does what she needs to do.

I think Oprah is an inspiration. She’s a great role model for all of us hoping to make positive changes in our lives. She gave me the privilege of guiding her; I hope you’ll give me that privilege, too.
