What's Your Child's BMI (Body Mass Index)
Recently, because obesity has become such a serious problem among children in the United States, the American Academy of Pediatrics has asked pediatricians to measure BMIs (Body Mass Index), a height-to-weight ratio, as one way of helping them spot the risk of obesity.
The calculation is the same as it is for adults, but readings vary because of childrens growth patterns. The pediatric growth charts for the U.S. population now include BMI for age and gender, and are available online (http://www.cdc.gov/growthcharts).
BMI can be used to determine your child's risk of developing certain health problems. The higher it is above the normal range of 18.5 to 24.9, the greater your child's risk.
